Putting this here so I can just link to this instead of having to explain myself every time.

Why Joker/Harley is a problematic relationship:

i will forward this by saying ship them all you want. But don’t ignore this crap or brush it under the rug, either. You can ship something and still admit it’s fucked up. Know what I mean? With that said, here we go. I will add to this and edit it as I see fit.

a) The Joker has attempted to murder Harley more than once. The most blatant attempts being, of course, the Mad Love push out of the top story window and also in one of the comic books, shooting Poison Ivy in the chest because he *thought* it was Harley.

b) Even when he isn’t trying to kill her, he’s usually using and abusing her. He likes the attention she gives him more than he likes her herself. A lot of the time she’s an afterthought. ex: the Harlequinnade episode (he was going to explode Gotham with her in it, and was a tad disappointed when she showed up and screwed with that), Wild Cards (backhands her so hard she flies across the room), and countless occasions where he kicks her out (often literally) for really tiny things.

c) IT’S NOT A BDSM THING. None of the things I’ve mentioned above have been consensual. AND JUST BECAUSE SHE KEEPS COMING BACK DOESN’T MEAN SHE CONSENTS TO IT (see reason ‘d’). BDSM relationships are all about consent, just like every other form of relationship is. Even if there are consensual bdsm elements to the relationship. That still doesn’t erase the fucked up non-consensual shit. So no. Still not an excuse.

d) Anyone can be in an abusive relationship. The strongest person ever can be caught in an abusive relationship. Men can be abused. Women can be abused. People of any other gender can be abused. It has nothing to do with strength. It has everything to do with the abuser’s manipulative nature. Complaints that admitting the Harley/Joker relationship is abuse makes Harley seem ‘weak’ are really unjustified and false. Abusive relationships are cyclical, and this cycle is really hard to leave just out of the pure nature of it.

e) Pretty much every time Joker comes crawling back to Harley, it’s a pure ego thing. He wants attention. Harley gives him attention. Ergo, he likes having her around because of the attention she gives him. Except he is also easily annoyed and agitated by her. Thus he continues the cycle stated above.

f) But even if he DID love her, he’s still an abusive douchebag to her, and thus that also doesn’t count as an excuse.

g) Harley is also very manipulative towards Joker at times, and while this can count as emotional abuse depending on the situation/time/etc, that doesn’t lessen the abuse factor of the relationship or “even out the playing field” for the better. It just makes it worse. She has also hurt Joker physically, though nearly all of those times (iirc) have been either self-defense or retaliation. Either way, having two abusive members of a relationship doesn’t make things any better. It just makes it even more abusive.

Plus, a few more thoughts:

*I DO want Harley to be free of Joker completely some day. It needs to be a slow but sure transition, though, instead of something totally out of left field.

*When people say ‘harley wouldn’t be harley without joker’: Ouch. Way to totally destroy any semblance of her autonomy and perpetuate a lot of misogynist crap (especially considering you can’t flip this sentence around. There was a joker before harley, there was a joker after harley, and he’s still totally himself without her. No one denies that. HMMMMMMM.).

*Disclaimer- I do agree that it’s forced and weird and while I like the idea of Harley finally leaving Joker for good, this wouldn’t be the way to do it, I feel.*

But…. the couple IS an abusive one? Just because they both are awful to each other doesn’t make it any less of an abusive relationship. I do agree the relationship isn’t GLORIFYING abuse, though. Mad Love for example is actually— in my opinion— showing it quite honestly and blatantly as a textbook abusive relationship. People just misinterpret it as something totally different for whatever reason. To me it’s like… obviously a sort of tale of caution.

but yeah.

can we please talk about this?
about how he actually notices her
about how he actually notices how she’s changed
about how he actually notices he cares about her

Sure.
Either:
a) The writer is making the Joker REALLY ooc
or
b) The Joker has a weird relationship with Harley in that he hates her yet loves the attention she gives him and misses that attention because he’s an egomaniac who feeds off of other peoples’ attention. Hence why he’s so sad whenever Batsy goes AWOL.
or
c) A little bit of both.
